The Bridge is a nonprofit organization that offers safe shelter and acceptance to anyone in our community who needs it. For the past year, since its inception, the organization has been operating in space offered by the Bluewater Church, at 746 Queen Street in downtown Kincardine. Starting with a free weekly drop-in lunch on Mondays, it quickly added a weekly youth lunch on Wednesdays. The drop-in centre allows for diverse segments of our community to meet and support each other in their goals. Regular attendees include a cross-section of the community, including isolated seniors and adults, those with mental and physical disabilities, health concerns or addiction issues, immigrant families and new residents to our community. A dedicated band of volunteers offer refreshments, lunch and laughter along with a variety of activities to keep everyone connected. Over the summer, other events such as movie nights and a pizza outing were added. The popularity of the drop-in has continued to expand its reach to the point that the group now is seeking to establish itself as a charity on its own. But expansion comes at a cost and the help of our community is needed if we wish to keep this valuable resource. The first step is to apply for charitable status. A fundraising dinner has been organized for Oct. 19 with the goal of raising $5,000 to cover the legal costs. The harvest-themed meal will be held at the SureStay Plus Best Western starting at 5 p.m. and includes music and a silent auction. Tickets are available at the Kincardine Independent office. If you can’t attend the event but would like to be a sponsor, make a donation to The Bridge or help out, contact founder Wes Larson at 519-3860558 or thebridge746@ gmail.com.
