OUA Hawks edge out Cubs

Ryan Fraser watched this ball, caught by Laurier's Adam Chong, but he had some key hits in Kincardine's 10-9 loss last night, including a two-RBI double. The Golden Hawks and Cubs, of the Thames Valley Senior Baseball League, put on a great show for a solid crowd on a beautiful night at Connaught Park in Kincardine. For the full story, including photos and comments, see next week's print edition of The Independent. This weekend the Cubs will be at the OBA tournament, while the Golden Hawks will be in preseason tournament action at Brock University (Josh Howald photo)

Sea Dogs, Majors to meet for Cup tonight

Junior hockeys biggest prize will be handed out tonight in Mississauga.

The Saint John Sea Dogs will face the host Mississauga St. Michaels Majors for the 2011 Master Card Memorial Cup.  The Sea Dogs finished 2-1 in the round robin tourney, while the Majors defeated Kootenay in a semifinal game Friday night.

Saint John, the QMJHL Champs, will be bolstered by the return of sniper Stephen Anthony, who hasn't played since the QMJHL championship series.  The Majors have a chance to redeem themselves after losing to Owen Sound in the OHL championship series.  Mississauga finished first overall in the OHL's regular season.

SugarKings still alive

Must beat St. Thomas tonight at home

If they win, they’re in.

The Elmira SugarKings stayed alive last night with a 4-2 win over the St. Thomas Stars, and must beat the  undefeated Niagara Falls Canucks tonight in order to play for the Sutherland Cup, the Provincial Junior B championship.

The Canucks have already punched their ticket to the final, while Elmira comes into the game at 1-3. Currently in limbo are the Western Conference champions from St. Thomas, who blew a huge opportunity last night on home ice to clinch a finals berth. Tonight’s game concludes the round robin.
