Blake Underwood sent Bulldog fans home happy, scoring in a shootout to lift Kincardine to a 5-4 win over the Mount Forest Patriots in Western Junior C preseason action.

The Bulldogs used the game to take a look at several local prospects, dressing eight players from Kincardine, Tiverton and Ripley.

The ‘Dogs were down 4-1 in the third, but battled back with a pair of power play goals to draw within one. Derek Regier scored the game tying goal with just 40 seconds remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs dominated the first period, but only found the back of the net once. About four minutes in, Ripley’s Ryan Armstrong waltzed over the blueline and fired a wrist shot past Mount Forest netminder Brad Unruh. Andrew Haefling assisted on the goal, which gave Kincardine a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs were down two men near the period’s end. As the first penalty expired, Pats forward Dean Costanzo circled out from behind the net, beating Jay Cameron with a wrist shot up high.

Cameron made 10 saves, playing half the game. Before he gave way to Matt Risk, Mount Forest took a 2-1 lead early in the second. Bobby Nicol was the scorer.

It stayed 2-1 until the midway point of the third period. Defenceman Brent Booth scored for the Pats, that goal quickly followed by a shorthanded effort which give Mount Forest a 4-1 hold on the game.

However, Jake Colley scored twice in a three-minute span, both of them on the powerplay. The first goal was assisted by Tanner Simpson and Kincardine’s Marek Siekierski. The third goal came with help from Armstrong and Tiverton’s Alex Legrand.
With 40 seconds left, Underwood set up Regier, who scored to send the game into an extra period.

Overtime and a three-man shootout solved nothing, and Underwood scored in the sudden death shootout to give Kincardine the win. His younger brother, Steve, scored in the three-man shootout, as did Costanzo for the Patriots.

Matt Risk replaced Cameron and made 16 saves for Kincardine. Unruh shared his duties with Nick Horrigan, who also made 16 stops.

Kincardine outshot the Patriots 48-26.

The Bulldogs will travel to Fergus Friday night to take on the Devils in another pre-season exhibition contest.
