Students in FDK1 at Kincardine Township Tiverton Public School are learning about contributing to their community, thanks to an initiative supported by teacher Robyn Beardsall and ECE Marcia Spencer.

The children were challenged to take part in creating a reverse Advent calendar for the Kincardine food bank, where instead of getting a treat each day, they were to contribute an item of food. Each day on the 24-day calendar was assigned a food group, such as beans, pasta or crackers. Spencer had contacted the food bank ahead of time to make sure they were collecting the items most needed.

“The kids were pretty excited,” said Spencer. “Each day they got to show what they brought.”

It is estimated that the 29 students have collected close to 20 kilograms of non-perishable items for the food bank shelves. The drive will finish on Thursday, Dec. 20, when all food will be delivered to the food bank.
