Staff, students and alumni gathered in the Kincardine and District Secondary School gym for a special farewell presentation and basketball game honouring teacher and coach Vince Yenssen, who begins a new position at Walkerton District Community School this week.

Principal Mark Ozorio lead the assembly by describing Yenssen’s hiring at the school 13 years ago, and made mention of his involvement with students and school sports. After opening remarks, a basketball game featuring teachers and alumni students vs the current boys and girls basketball teams ensued. Yenssen sunk the first point of the game and the final basket, leading his team to a 29 to 27 win over the students.

Presentations, by teachers and students he coached, followed the game.

“He is good because he cares,” said student Rose Pande.

The students spoke of team highlights and successes.

Echoing the leadership of her coach, Kennedy Farrell said, “The best part of basketball is winning, but not all wins are on the scoreboard.”

Staff presented a special plaque to Yenssen with the phrase "always a knight in our hearts." The afternoon was filled with laughter, loud cheers and a few tears as the group collectively wished a favorite teacher best wishes in his new position.
