Ripley blanks Petrolia 3-0


Jason Hamilton posted a 53-save shutout as the Ripley Wolves dumped Petrolia Friday night on the road in WOAA Senior AA hockey action.

Ripley scored twice in the first period and again in the third for a 3-0 win, despite being outshot 53-31 by the Squires.

It leaves the Wolves with a 3-1 record, tied with three other teams for second place overall in the WOAA with six points.

Friday night in Petrolia, the Squires outshot Ripley 20-8 in the opening period, but managed to get to the first intermisison with a 2-0 lead. Captain Brett Catto scored five minutes into this game for Ripley. Andrew Walsh and Cody Britton assisted on the eventual game winner. Less than a minute later, Ben Scheel scored his first senior hockey goal from Tyler McCarthy.

Following a scoreless middle frame, Scheel scored again early in the third period. He took a pass from Ryan Dudgeon to make this a 3-0 game, and that's how it ended.

Elsewhere in the WOAA on the weekend, Shelburne beat Tavistock 5-4 in the lone Sunday game. Saturday night saw Huron East hammer Lucknow 10-3 and Tillsonburg beat Petrolia 6-2. Friday night, Tavistock needed overtime to beat the Lancers 6-5, while Durham defeated the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks 4-1. Elora beat Milverton 3-2 in overtime while Clinton hammered on Shallow Lake 9-1.

This weekend, the Wolves will be in Shallow Lake Friday night to take the 1-4 Crushers. Shallow Lake has been outscored 34-5 in those five games. Saturday night is Meet the Wolves Night in the village, with the 2-3 Tavistock Royals visiting for a 7 p.m. start at the Ripley Huron Community Complex.
