The Bulldogs are back on ice.
Kincardine’s Western Junior C team used a Sunday night skate not only to get a look at some prospects, but also to make several key signings.

General Manager Doug Kennedy said that while he wasn’t able to get all the players he was hoping to sign cards Sunday, the team is starting to take shape.

Returning to the team are Nathan Barfoot, Alex MacLeod, Josh Catto, Devin Kemp and Tim Dwinnell, who signed one of four overage cards available to the Bulldogs. A second overage spot is reserved by goaltender Andrew Smith, who hasn’t yet signed but is committed to return. Kennedy said the other two spots will be determined shortly, but didn’t want to release any information until he had talked to his players. A likely candidate for one of those spots is Blake Underwood, who was at Sunday’s skate.

Brian Royle, the team’s new head coach, said that his son Tyler, will not be one of the four overage players. The defenceman is away at school and will not be living in the area.

Kennedy also signed two new players at Sunday’s skate. Paisley’s Tom Bujold and Tom Michi of Sauble Beach, who both stood out in the crowd of 50 skaters, both signed following the workout.

“We sent out 100 invites and we expect another 10-15 skaters here (tonight for practice)” said Royle, who was disappointed more Kincardine players didn’t attend the try-out.

He’s looking to fill three spots on the blueline and as many as six forward positions. The team is also in the hunt for a goaltender to back up Smith, who didn’t lose a regular season game last year.
There were six goalies at Sunday’s practice.

Most of the players trying out for the club will get a look in an exhibition game, said Royle, as the team has several preseason games lined up. The first one is Sunday at 4 p.m., when Kincardine will host the Owen Sound Junior B Greys.
The regular season will begin Sept. 19 at the Davidson Centre.
