Madelyn Eybergen had an off day, and still ended up sixth in the province.

The Kincardine District Secondary School athlete competed at the OFSAA provincial track and field championship meet in Belleville. She and Liam Fitzgerald were the only two KDSS athletes to advance to both the OFSAA West championship meet and the OFSAA provincial championship event. The junior girls long jump was held on Saturday afternoon.

Eybergen, whose personal best jump this season is 1.66m, passed at the first three heights and entered the mix at 1.5m. She missed her first attempt, but successfully cleared the bar on her second try at it. She did the same thing at 1.55m. She missed all three attempts at clearing 1.6m.

Autumn Biggar from Beamsville handily won the event. Her best jump was 1.76m.

"If I jumped like I normally do, or my highest height, I would have finished second or third," said Eybergen.

While the high school track and field season is now over, Eybergen will continue to train and compete with the Saugeen Track Club. She will take a little time off, however, and will not compete this weekend.

Fitzgerald, meanwhile, competed in the midget boys 3,000m race in Belleville, also on Saturday.

He finished 43 seconds off pace of the winner - Dakota Goguen of William Mulock Secondary School - with a time of 9:56.27.
