Sugar Kings will play for Sutherland Cup

Listowel knocked out by London

Sometimes the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs experience some glitches.

This would be one of those years.

The Sutherland Cup will feature the Elmira Sugar Kings and the London Nationals. The Listowel Cyclones, who defeated Elmira to win the Cherrey Cup, is left looking on from the outside. Listowel, Caledonia and London won the three conference championships. Another berth went to the next best team in the postseason, which was the Elmira Sugar Kings. The top seed and the fourth seed are to meet in the Sutherland Cup semi-finals - but that would have meant another series between Listowel and Elmira. Since teams can't play back-to-back series, Listowel faced London in one semi-final while the Sugar Kings played Caledonia in the other.

It's a disappointing finish to a fantastic season for the Cyclones, but that is hockey. While Danny Skinner won't get to play for the Sutherland Cup this season, older brother Ethan will get to play for his second Sutherland Cup.

Ethan Skinner, in fact, scored the winning goal in Game 6 of the Sugar Kings series with Caledonia Sunday afternoon. His goal late in the second period gave Elmira a 3-2 win in both the game and the series. He also assisted on Mitch Hoelscher's goal seven minutes earlier. Elmira trailed 2-0 in the second period but scored three times in the span of seven minutes to turn this game around. Jonathan Reinhart was superb for Elmira, making 42 stops to keep Caledonia at bay.

Ethan Skinner has 11 goals and 27 points on this year's playoff run for Elmira.

Meanwhile, the season came to a crashing halt in overtime for Listowel Friday night on home ice. Brandon Glover scored his second overtime goal of the series to lift the London Nationals to a 3-2 win in Game 5, which clinched the series for the Western Conference champions. It was Glover's second goal of the game and fifth of the series.

Listowel had forced overtime with 26 seconds remaining in regulation, with goaltender Brock Baier on the bench in favour of an extra attacker.

Danny Skinner scored once against London in the opening game of the series.

UPDATE: The Sutherland Cup finals started last night (Wednesday) at Western Fair in London with the Sugar Kings winning a 3-2 contest. Ethan Skinner scored a power play goal in the first period to make it 1-1. Jeff Jordan and Ty Biles scored second period goals to give Elmira a 3-1 lead heading to the third. Austin Kemp scored midway through the third for the Nats, but London couldn't even the score.

Game 2 of this series is Saturday night in London at Western Fair. Game 3 is Sunday at 7 p.m. in Elmira and Game 4 is Wednesday, May 3 in Elmira. If necessary, Game 5 is in London May 5, Game 6 in Elmira the afternoon of May 7 and a seventh game would be palyed Monday, May 8 at Western Fair.
