The Alliston Hornets are through to the Provincial Junior Hockey League Schmalz Cup semi-finals.

The Hornets disposed of the Mount Forest Patriots in Game 5 of the quarter-finals Friday night at home. The PJHL Pollock Division champs from Mount Forest staved off elimination with a Game 4 victory at home last Tuesday night.

Alliston will now face the Port Hope Panthers in the All-Ontario semi-finals. Port Hope is coming off a six-game series win over Lakefield.

The Hornets, best of the PJHL Carruthers Division, couldn't complete the four-game sweep of Mount Forest. After a dominating Game 3 performance, Alliston dropped the fourth game of this series thanks to a third period power play goal. Ostop Mostowy notched the game winner on a third period power Patriots power play. Mitch Betts added an insurance marker into an empty net. Michael Stefanelli and Alliston's Devon Gillham had traded first period goals.

Mount Forest climbed out of a 3-0 deficit earlier on this playoff run against Mitchell. But the Hornets were having none of that Friday night. Alliston finished off Mount Forest on home ice with a 10-6 win. The Hornets led 4-2 and 7-3 at the breaks.

Gillham had three goals and five points in Game 5 to pace the Hornets offensively. Ryan Young and Will Ferguson each score twice. Troy Oakley answered for Mount Forest with five points of his own. Oakley scored twice and set up three other goals.

A schedule for the series between Alliston and Port Hope had yet to be finalized as of Monday. The other semi-final series will feature the Essex 73's and the defending champions, the Ayr Centennials.
