The Walkerton Hawks are on the brink of elimination.

Few would have predicted the Mount Forest Patriots would have a chance to eliminate the Hawks and win the Provincial Junior Hockey League's Pollock Division at home Friday night in Game 6 of the league finals.

Mount Forest finished third in the regular season standings, with two points of the fourth place Nicol Insurance Kincardine Bulldogs and the fifth place Hanover Barons. The Pats had no trouble sweeping the sixth place Wingham Ironmen in the opening round, but then went down 3-0 to the second place Mitchell Hawks. But Mitchell couldn't finish Wingham off, and the Ironmen stayed alive in Games 4 and 5 and forced a seventh game with an overtime win in Game 6. After a convincing Game 7 win, the Pats promptly went into the league finals and shut out Walkerton 4-0 in Game 1.

The Hawks won Games 2 and 3 by 4-2 and 6-2 scores, respectively, but the Patriots shutout the Hawks once again 4-0 in Game 4. On Sunday, Mount Forest defeated Walkerton 5-2 in Walkerton in Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Mount Forest will try to finish off the Hawks Friday night at home. The puck drops at 8 p.m. in Mount Forest. If Walkerton forces a seventh and deciding game in this championship series, it would be played Saturday night in Walkerton at 8:20 p.m.

Last year Kincardine defeated the Hawks in overtime of Game 7 to win the Western Junior C League championship.
