Shortly after 5 a.m. on Friday, South Bruce OPP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 9 in Carrick Township involving a freight truck and Volkswagen Golf vehicle.

Initial investigation suggests that the Volkswagen, which was southbound on Highway 9, entered the northbound lane into the path of the freight truck.  In an effort to avoid a serious head-on collision, the truck, carrying 20,000 litres of molasses, entered the ditch and subsequently rolled in a field. Approximately 800 litres of diesel spilled. The Ministry of Environment had been notified.  The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old Woodstock man, was not injured.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 24-year old Toronto man, was transported to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 9 between Sideroad 45 and Sideroad 50 remained closed for investigation and cleanup.

Anyone with information which may assist in the investigation is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
