The winners were announced last Monday evening at the TownePlace Suites Marriott hotel during a volunteer signup event. Kayla Piekarz’s logo design, incorporating a lighthouse and sunset, was selected to represent the 2018 reunion, and Keith Foster’s slogan ‘Bring it Home’ will be the tagline. Both have already been incorporated onto reunion t-shirts and will be featured on merchandise and promotional material.

Piekarz, community co-ordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kincardine, moved to the community from Kitchener less than two years ago with her boyfriend.

”I always wanted to live in the country and close to the beach,” she said.

Piekarz has forever had an interest in art and when the contest was announced decided to come up with a submission.

“Everyone comes back here to celebrate and I wanted to show what Kincardine means to me,” she said.

The historic lighthouse and the breathtaking sunsets over Lake Huron were front of mind. She was happy with her design but said she was unsure of her chances.

“Some great people did some awesome work. I really didn’t think they’d pick me.”

Foster’s story is remarkably similar to Piekarz’s. He moved to Kincardine two years ago with his wife Sarah, a Kincardine native whose father owns Bean’s Bistro, when she took a job at Bruce Power. Foster moved his website development business, ZUUL, here and also started up an online community www.inkincardine.com as a way to better immerse himself into the community.

When he learned about the reunion logo and slogan contest, Foster thought it would be a fun exercise. He started brainstorming with his wife and kept coming back to the lighthouse and its function of guiding people home safely. He came up with several variations of the slogan before settling on ‘Bring it Home’. It is ironic, and fortunate, he said, that the winning logo features a lighthouse.

The 2018 KOBOS reunion will take place Aug. 2-6, 2018.
