Cents lead Schmalz Cup 2-0

The Ayr Centennials hold a 2-0 lead on the Port Hope Panthers in the OHA provincial Junior C Schmalz Cup finals.

The Cents won the opening game of the provincial finals 6-3 on Friday night and then took a 3-2 decision on Sunday afternoon in front of more than 1,000 people. Game 3 of the series is tonight (Wednesday) with Game 4 scheduled for Friday.

Ayr, from the Midwestern Junior C League, swept the defending champions from Essex in the semi-finals. Port Hope, meanwhile, defeated Alliston. Alliston eliminated the Nicol Insurance Kincardine Bulldogs in their quarter-final series.

In Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League news, the Sutherland Cup will begin tomorrow night in Caledonia. The Corvairs swept Waterloo in one GOJHL semi-final series, while the London Nationals eliminated the Stratford Cullitons in Game 6 of their semi-final series with a 6-2 win.

Game 2 of the Sutherland Cup is Saturday night at Western Fair in London and Game 3 is Sunday in Caledonia.
