Good start for local teams

The 29th annual Kincardine Regional Silver Stick is underway, with local teams getting off to a strong start at all three arenas.

In Ripley, the novice Wolf Cubs posted a big 3-0 win over Minto this morning to kick off action at the Ripley-Huron Community Complex. Ripley took a 2-0 lead into the third period, and capped off a shutout win by scoring into an empty net with 6.9 seconds remaining on the clock. The novices, playing on home ice in front of a large crowd, looked strong in this contest. They will be in action again at 2:15 p.m. this afternoon (Sunday) against Seaforth.

It was one of three games at 9 a.m. that involved local teams seeking a Regional Silver Stick title. In Kincardine, the Timber Mart bantam Kinucks opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against BCH. The bantams will face Saugeen Shores tonight at 6:45 p.m. at the Davidson Centre, immediately following the tournament's official opening ceremonies, which will include the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band. Saugeen Shores, meanwhile, played Listowel in the second bantam game of the day at the Davidson Centre and trailed Listowel 3-1 in the second period. Listowel was badly outplaying Saugeen Shores through two periods.

The peewees will also play again today, with a 5:20 p.m. game scheduled against Mitchell in Tiverton. Kincardine's second entry in the peewee division will take on Seaforth at 12:30 p.m. today in Tiverton, while the Ripley peewee Wolves will meet West-Grey at 1:45 p.m.
