Gregory wins junior tennis tourney

Robert Gregory was the first person at the tennis courts Saturday morning. When the 12-year-old left the Kincardine Tennis Club’s inaugural junior tennis tournament, he did so a winner.

Gregory cruised through the round-robin portion of the tournament undefeated before beating underdog Malcolm Lane in the final match of Saturday’s junior event in Kincardine. The pair played an entertaining, hard-hitting match to wrap up the tournament in style. They had many good rallies, but Lang, the youngest competitor registered at only 8-years-old, couldn’t match Gregory’s strong ground strokes.

Meanwhile on Court 2, Charlie Hall-Elwood won the tournament’s consolation championship with a win over the day’s girls champion Isabella Lane.

The junior tournament, the first organized by the Kincardine Tennis Club in many years, was the second tournament the Club has hosted in the last month.  The Men’s Singles Classic was held last month. There is one more tournament planned for this season, a closing doubles event for club members that will be held later this month.

“We were hoping that the tournament would have attracted a larger group of young tennis” said Josh Howald of the Kincardine Tennis Club, “but the players we did have were skilled and clearly enthusiastic about tennis. It was clear they had fun, so we consider it a success. You have to start somewhere, and hopefully we can grow the junior tournament next season.”

The club’s long time junior instructor, Sally Treidlinger, presented the winners with plaques and other prizes. Treidlinger saw all of the action on Saturday and said the young players kept getting better and better as the day continued.

The Kincardine Tennis Club’s Fall League is expected to begin in the next week. The final tournament of the season will be the club’s closing doubles tournament. That event is set for Saturday, Sept. 26. The deadline to register for the doubles tournament is Wednesday, Sept. 23. You can sign up as a doubles team, or as a solo player.
