One man is dead, and another man is facing charges following a two-vehicle crash near Cargill late Sunday morning.
The South-Bruce OPP received a report of the crash at the intersection of Bruce County Road 3 and Cargill Road in Brant Twp. at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Officers arrived on the scene to find a beige GMC Sierra 2500 pick-up truck pulling a Prowler 5th wheel trailer and a black Nissan Rogue involved in a crash. They have since determined that the Sierra was travelling east on the Cargill Road when it pulled into the path of the Nissan, which was travelling north on Bruce County Road 3.
The driver of the Rogue, identified by police on Monday afternoon as Byron Leader of Perth East Twp., was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was airlifted to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Two more people were transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police withheld the identity of the deceased until Monday when they were able to contact Leader's next of kin. Walkerton Fire Department firefighters and Bruce County paramedics both attended the scene. Hydro One was also called to the crash site, as a hydro pole was damaged in the crash.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit and the Coroner's Office are assisting the South-Bruce OPP with the investigation. Bruce County Road 3 was closed between Concession 6, Brant Twp. and Concession 10, Brant Twp., for the protection of emergency responders, but has since re-opened.
As a result of the investigation, the driver of the GMC pick-up truck, a 56-year-old man from Wilmot Twp., was charged with Failure to stop at a stop sign.
