A former Kincardine family counsellor has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to sex-related crimes.

Gabriele DelBianco, 57, appeared in Ontario Superior Court in Sarnia last Wednesday for sentencing. He pleaded guilty in February to sexual assault charges on two teenage girls. Originally, DelBianco faced 18 charges. He was found guilty on three.

The charges date back to the 1980s when DelBianco was a priest who served at parishes in Windsor, Wallaceburg and Tecumseh. According to the Diocese of London, he also served as a part-time chaplain for two high schools. After the charges were filed, the Diocese issued a statement publicly apologizing to the victims and offered counselling.

DelBianco left the priesthood in the mid-1990s and moved to the Kincardine area where he set up a company, Innerfit, to provide motivational counselling.

Along with a four-year prison sentence, DelBianco receive a 10-year firearms prohibition and a DNA order was applied. He will be placed on the Sex Offender Registry for life. The court also applied Section 161 of the Criminal Code which will prohibit DelBianco from attending public areas, such as parks, where persons under the age of 16 are present.
