The Archie McMillan Memorial midget hockey tournament kicks off Friday night at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.
Steve Stepaniak, head coach of the Kincardine Miller Insurance midget rep team, said that while there may only be six teams this year, they are six quality teams. Most are strong clubs that the midget Kinucks have butted heads with over the past three seasons on runs to OMHA finals.
The action begins at 8 p.m. Friday night, when East Lambton and Petrolia will do battle to officially open the weekend.That game is followed by the hometown Kinucks against the Strathroy Jr. Rockets.
Saturday, things begin at 10:30 a.m. with Saugeen Shores against Petrolia. Kincardine takes on Mt. Brydges at 11:45 a.m., followed by Saugeen Shores vs. East Lambton and the final preliminary round game between Strathroy and Mt. Brydges. Two playoff round games will be played Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m.. Sunday, the first game is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the tournament final set for 3 p.m.
The Miller Insurance Kinucks are coming off a good weekend in Collingwood, despite a tough finish. The midgets ran through Stirling, Dorchester and Penetang, but eventually lost a 4-1 (EN) game to Collingwood in the tournament final. Kincardine led 1-0 until a major penalty squng the momentum midway through the contest.
Kincaridne has won the past two Archie McMillan tournament titles. Last year, the Kinucks beat Mt. Brydges in the championship final.
