The Bruce County Rugby Club has a pair of home games this Saturday in Tiverton.

The Niagara Rugby Union A Division Barbarians will take on the Niagara Wasps in a highly anticipated battle at the new club’s new home field in Tiverton. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. Following that NRUA match, the Barbs II will take on Niagara’s second team in a 3 p.m. game.

Bruce County is coming off a split against Waterloo County on Saturday. In Cambridge, both clubs were shorthanded, but played some quality rugby. In the NRUA game, Jordan Woito and Sean Reid each scored first half trys, and Jason Doble converted on one of the ensuing kicks to leave the score tied at the half. The teams continued to trade points in the second before Bruce County rumbled to score three times in the final 15 minutes. Nick Bromfield scored two trys, while Theunis Van Zyl scored one and Doble sealed the win with a lovely drop goal. The 34-22 win gave the NRUA Barbarians a chance to finish third overall with an upset win on Saturday against the Wasps.

The Barbs II then faced the Kitchener Knaves, and found themselves in an early hole. Still, the Barbs battled for four trys, a convert and two penalty kicks. Mitch Bussey, Mitch Kraemer, Woito and Connor Farley-McLeod each scored for the Barbs II. Several playes, including Woito, had their fitness tested by performing double duty with back-to-back matches. Bruce County played right until the final whistle, but came out on the wrong end of a 43-28 decision.

As mentioned, both teams will be in action this Saturday in Tiverton. The club will also use the two home starts to celebrate a new sponsorship deal with Molson Coors. A cheque presentation is set for 1:15 p.m., prior to the first match. Following both games, Molson Coors and the Barbs will head to the Kings Pearl in Tiverton for the second annual underwear party. The party raises money for cancers below the waist. This age of majority event begins at 4 p.m., with live entertainment all evening.
