A project to replace the roof on the Kincardine Public Library has been deferred until next year after bids for the work came in at more than twice the budgeted amount.

“I’m afraid it’s not good news,” public works director Gagan Sandhu told Kincardine council at its meeting last Wednesday.

The municipality had budgeted $88,000 for the project, which included replacing the existing shingled and flat roof surfaces and relocating the HVAC unit and chimney to install the new roof and new downspouts and eaves troughs.

The municipality received two bids; one from D.J. Peat Roofing and Sheet Metal Ltd. for $169,649.16 and another from H and N Roofing and Sheet Metal Limited for $186,337.

The project will be carried over to the 2013 budget with an updated estimate.

Council had made a request last year that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission hold public meetings for OPG’s DGR project in Kincardine.

“They haven’t announced the place or the date, but they have agreed with our recommendation,” mayor Larry Kraemer said at last Wednesday’s council meeting.
