The Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board (BGCDSB) trustees have approved plans to merge with the Wellington and Huron-Perth Catholic school boards.

The proposal to amalgamate the boards was brought forward in June and originated with the Ontario Ministry of Education, which has been trying to reduce the number of school boards in the province.

BGCDSB director Bruce MacPherson delayed his retirement in order to help with the transition, should the merger take place.

In a memo to BWDSB staff following last week’s board meeting, where trustees gave the go ahead to move forward with the amalgamation, MacPherson said discussions have been ongoing between the three school boards, as well as between superintendents of business and directors of education.

“The purpose of these meetings was a sharing session regarding student achievement and well-being, finances and highlights of the Catholic culture in each of the boards,” he said.

The three school boards plan to seek the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Education to develop a merger plan. Once the plan is complete it will be sent to each of the boards for approval before it is submitted to the Ministry.
