'Dogs back in win column

The Carruthers Nicol Insurance Kincardine Bulldogs got back in the win column last night with a 3-0 win over the Mitchell Hawks in Western Junior C hockey action.

Kincardine rode a 50-save, shutout performance from goaltender Gatlin Burt to snap a streak of seven consecutive defeats. With the win, the Bulldogs move three points up on sixth place Mount Forest and eight back of the fourth place Wingham Ironmen.

The Hawks outshot Kincardine 25-6 in the first period alone, but it was the 'Dogs who scored first, Garrett Simmons scored on a second period powerplay, and Jared Colling made it 2-0 41 seconds later. It was more than enough for Burt, but Alex Legrand made it official with another power play goal in the third period. Kincardine was 2-for-4 with the man advantage. Mitchell's, meanwhile, was 0-for-10. The Hawks outshot Kincardine 17-11 in the third, and 50-27 in total.

Kincardine will host the Patriots tomorrow (Friday) night for an 8:30 p.m. start at the Davidson Centre. The Pats were dumped 5-2 by the 24-3-2 Walkerton Hawks last night at home. Kincardine's Keegan Woodman made 22 saves for Walkerton to get his eighth win of the season. Kincardine will also be in action Saturday night, travelling to Mitchell for a 7:15 p.m. road game.

DOG BITES: Justin Hammond backed up Burt last night against Mitchell. Hammond was acquired from the Hanover Barons for the rights to Derrick Mitchell...One other game on the Western front Friday night, as the Wingham Ironmen will be at the P&H Centre to take on the Barons...The scoring race is being dominated by Walkerton. Six of the top seven league leaders are all Hawks,starting with Eric Lekun with 36 goals and 73 points in 28 games.
