It took six rounds of a shootout, but the Wingham Ironmen defeated the Carruthers Nicol Insurance Kincardine Bulldogs 4-3 last night (Wednesday).

Joel Bowman was the 13th player to try his luck in the shootout, and the first player to score. He beat Gatlin Burt to end this Wednesday night affair at the Wescast Community Centre in Wingham.

The Ironmen stormed out to a 3-0 first period lead last night, but Kincardine scored once in the second period, again early in the third and finally with just 1:26 remaining. Shawn Stewart forced overtime, scoring from brother Paul and Alex Legrand. Ryan Armstrong and Joel Alton each tallied once for the ‘Dogs, who get a point for the shootout loss to move one up on the sixth place Mount Forest Patriots. Wade Stephenson scored twice for fourth place Wingham, and Bowman also scored once in regulation.

Jeff Puddephatt made 25 stops in goal, plus another six in the shootout for the win. Burt stopped 31 shots for Kincardine, who is idle until the new year. Kincardine will be in action again Jan. 4 at home to the Mitchell Hawks. For full details, don’t miss next week’s print edition of The Kincardine Independent.
