The Kincardine District Secondary School cross-country team got a great jump on the season.

The Knights had three first place finishes and two team titles at an exhibition meet last week.

Kortney Watson  was second in the midget girls race, behind only teammate Cheyenne Hunter. Together with MacKenzie Marshall and Hayley Stewart, the midgets won the overall team title.

KDSS also finished 1-2 in the midget boys race. Jesse Chen was first to cross the finish line, followed by Nate Fohkens. Those finishes, along with strong performances from Francis Lozada and Zihan Wong, gave Kincardine a second team title.

The senior girls were second overall, led by race winner Hayley Green  and Ramona Neferu, who was third.

Other KDSS runners who had top-10 finishes included: Justine Watson, fifth; Sarah Blackwood, ninth; Andrew Sweeney, seventh; Nick McNulty, ninth.

The squad will be practicing all week in order to prepare for the Bluewater Athletic Association (BAA) championship meet Oct. 17 in Hepworth at Sawmill Trails.

The CWOSSA championships will be held at Pipers Glen Golf Course outside Port Elgin Oct. 23, with the provincial championships (OFSAA) set for Nov. 1 in Sarnia.
