Rights and freedoms

Municipalities all over Ontario have been standing up to the Provincial Government over the Green Energy Act, by introducing bylaws against Wind Turbine developments. Even close to home in Huron-Kinloss.

The municipalities have used various means including the powers of the Municipal Act, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. They have used these acts to protect the "health and safety" of people.

The Green Energy Act in itself is a terrible abuse of power by the Provincial Government to remove the

rights and powers from local control and over ride the rights of local people to decide on the type of community that they want to live in.

We in the West gloat over the so called democracy that we live in and encourage others to replicate, as well as applaud them when they fight for it. Yet, every day it seems another little piece of our rights is removed. It is time we started to stand up for our rights and a good start would be if every municipality would stand up for its right to plan its own bylaws based on local knowledge, conditions and the wishes of the residents of that municipality.

Locally, is it not time that our council started to protect the residents of this municipality? Nothing has been done here since these windmills started blighting our environment and when our councillors state they will look into it and ask for legal advice we again seem to be waiting and not acting. With so many municipalities already entered into the fight, should it not be as easy as to ask one of them, say Huron-Kinloss, what its legal department  is using in its fight? Do we need to reinvent the wheel? Time, effort and expenses have already been expended by many municipalities; let us use some of their experiences to catch up and join them in the fight.

Let me emphasize, this is a fight, and a very important fight, not just against windmills, but against the slow deterioration of of our rights and freedoms which we all thought had been guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and are slowly being chipped away at.
