Major winter storm slams region

Highway 21 closed for three days

Kincardine and the surrounding region were walloped by winter weather last week that shut down most major roads late last week.

A winter storm blew in last Wednesday afternoon with winds gusting to nearly 90 kilometres per hour by Thursday. School buses for Kincardine schools were cancelled at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday leaving parents scrambling to make arrangements for student pick-ups. Out-of-town school buses were cancelled on Thursday and all school buses for Kincardine schools were cancelled on Friday.

Highway 21 was closed from Owen Sound all the way to Grand Bend for a period of time before some sections opened up by the weekend, as did Highway 86 from Amberley to Lucknow. Highway 21 from Amberley to Goderich remained closed until mid-day Saturday as snow plows worked to clear drifts.

Airport runway refurbishment project takes off

By Barb McKay

A $2 million project to improve Kincardine’s runway and taxiways was given the green light from the Municipality of Kincardine council last week with a goal to complete it in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations.

Upgrades to the municipal airport’s aging main runway, in particular, have been a long time coming. Recommendations to rehabilitate runway 13-31 came from a report from engineers and consultants of Genivar back in 2013. Consultants urged the municipality to deal with the runway in 2014, and attached a cost of $1 million to the project.

Winter Relief Program announced

Last week, Hydro One launched its new Winter Relief Program which will help customers in hardship get their electricity service reconnected for the winter. Currently about 1,400 Hydro One residential customers are without electrical service due to unpaid balances.

“This program is about doing the right thing for our customers who are experiencing hardship,” said Ferio Pugliese, Executive Vice-President, Customer Care and Corporate Affairs. “We are changing the way we do business and by doing so we are currently reviewing all our customer -facing policies and practices, including how we care for our most vulnerable customers. The Winter Relief Program is one of many changes we will be undertaking.”

Charge laid in crash

A 27-year-old man has been charged after a three-car crash on Highway 21 in Kincardine Twp on Dec. 12.

The South-Bruce OPP was called to the scene of a crash at 5:47 p.m. Officers arrived to find a white Ford F-250, a grey Ford Edge and a white Pontiac Vibe were all involved. The driver of the Ford F250, a man from Wilmot Twp., was charged with failing to drive in the marked lane.

The driver of the Pontiac Vibe, meanwhile, received treatment at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A Silver Stick for the books?

Kincardine teams have sights set high

Not to put any pressure on the youngsters, but it wouldn’t be a shock if the novice, peewee and bantam Kinucks were all playing for championships on Friday, Dec. 30. Anything can, and often does, happen at the Silver Stick tournament, but all three Kincardine Minor Hockey Association teams are having excellent seasons and head into the Silver Stick on a roll.
