Freiburger hangs on for derby win

Joseph Frieburger’s 15.82lb salmon lasted a whole week on the leaderboard and is the largest salmon of the 2010 Fish Kincardine derby. The St. Clement’s native survived a late scare that saw Stratford’s David Bedford bring in a 15.36lb salmon with just two hours left in the derby.

The top local finisher in the salmon category was Josh Kunkel. Kunkel, from Tiverton, was fifth overall with a catch of 14.35lb.

In the trout division, Craig Wilton also hung on to the lead for more than a week with his 19.15lb lake trout. Kincardine’s Gord Rodgers was third with a 13.7lb trout. Kunkel was also fourth in the trout division.

Both Wilton and Freiburger took home new ATVs as part of their prize packages from the derby. The closing ceremonies and awards were doled out Sunday afternoon at the Kincardine harbour.

Here and there

Dana and I slept like babies Sunday night. That’s because we spent the weekend babysitting our 19-month-old grandson.

By the time Ontario children reach school age, few are getting the required 90 minutes a day of activity, some expert was saying in the paper last week.

That puzzles me.

I’ve yet to see a normal pre-schooler who, given the chance, isn’t always moving.

If kids aren’t getting enough exercise, the fault is not theirs – it’s society’s.

CAROL BELL

April 27, 1925 - May 22, 2010

Carol Rose Bell lost her brave fight with cancer at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre – Kincardine on May 22, 2010, in her 86th year.

Left to mourn her passing is her son Richard Bell, and his wife Faye, of Nova Scotia; and her daughter Christine, and her husband Luc Gravel, of Point Clark.

Please return

Would the person who stole or relocated the cherub from the garden at the boardwalk in memory of my son please return it. I placed it there on Thursday and walked my family from out of town down a couple of days later on the holiday weekend to see the memory garden.

I was so disappointed to see the cherub gone, especially as my son had a fatal accident in Lake Huron.

If it is returned, no questions will be asked.

Hoping you will respect my wishes.

A grieving mother
